Last week, Ready director Shane spoke to Bath Spa University students as part of an Industry Insights panel.
He opened with a brief overview of who we are and what we do, to give the students some context of what promotional marketing entails.
‘The end game is to compel the consumer to connect with a brand. Often, the problem brands face is that they may know what they want to say, but not how to say it. They need people with creative specialties to help them convey that message. That’s where we come in.’
Ready celebrated its 10th birthday last year which makes this the longest job Shane’s ever had. So, he went right back to the beginning of how it all began with his twin brother Jake.
If you want to know the story of how Ready came to be, then check out the Ready Turns 10 post.
The idea of planning out the rest of your life can be pretty scary, especially for a student on the cusp of life. Shane explained how this isn’t always necessary.
‘If we had sat down and wrote a business plan, we might have been put off by the idea of starting our own company.’
Passion, however, is key. Shane loved the work he was doing and hasn’t given that up now. Some company directors find themselves stepping back from the creative work, but Shane said he would never give that up.
And the question on everybody’s mind: What do they look for in potential new recruits?
‘The most essential component is always passion. Then there are 3 things I look for: Firstly, attention to detail. Everything we do gets checked and double checked. Secondly, willingness and ability to learn. Technology changes every day and the marketing world is constantly shifting. We need to continue to grow our knowledge if we want to stay current. And last, but not least, being able to have fun. If you don’t have fun, what’s the point?’
And fun fact of the day is that Shane is 6% Polynesian!
We had great feedback from the session, both from those in the audience and the organisers. Look out for more Ready talks coming later this year.
